. . . when you look up to the sky and see the sun,
the moon and the stars--all the heavenly array--
do not be enticed into bowing down to them and
worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned
to all the nations under heaven. --Deut. 4:19 niv
BLUE MOON

The final day of a too swift year arrives in a drizzle and a blue moon overhead. At the end of this decade, at the close of anno domini 2009 God sets the lunar landscape alit edge to edge not once but twice in a month.

This sky brilliance is what peaks the curiosity of men, women, girls and boys. Long ago before human inventions distracted minds, before digital transmissions locked us in thoughtless tweets and hyped entertainments, folks stood outdoors to wonder at galactic fireworks and patterned star settings.

Ancients conjectured shapes, guidance, and mythologies from the stars; some moderns divine their futures to astral tealeaves tied to birth months.

So many moderns tie their moments to earthbound stars, you know, those Bollywood, Hollywood, multi-trophy winners in sports, politics, entertainment. These bright glitterati somehow trend the way we dress, walk, and talk. At times they seem to excuse our private indiscretions by their personal indiscretions gossiped in public.

These earthbound stars are just like us, made in the image of Good, yet fallen far short of Perfect Good. These earthbound souls and we earthbound souls need to getaway from the dense clouds and artificial lights to enjoy the full, blue moon this New Year’s Eve. That stunning moon basks in the sunbeams, which reflect praise that redounds to their Maker, the Maker of Heaven, earth, and all living things. Like you.

We don’t have to do anything flashy or quiet, to be loved by such a Maker. But we do need to accept all that our Maker has done to remove the punishment of our indiscretions so that we would be forever loved, forever stunning in His light.
